Anonymous asked: Who do you think was more of Jefferson's close friend--Madison or Adams? Why do you think so? (I've always thought it was Adams, but I heard someone else say that Adams and Madison were close friends)

Madison, definitely. Adams and Jefferson certainly had a more interesting friendship, with their contrasting personalities and the fact that they overcame past political battles in the end to reconcile. However, Madison really was Jefferson’s bff. They were  political allies, and lived close enough together that they saw one another often. There was never a serious disruption in their friendship. So they really were the closest of life-long friends.

Jefferson and Adams friendship was forged during the Revolution, and heavily based on that. They shared a bond, but it was something of a strained bond.

A simple way to illustrate it: Jefferson could send letter to James Madison listing John Adams’ s character flaws. I don’t think he ever did it the other way around.

Adams and Madison, as far as I know, were never really friends.
